I can't say enough good things about Dr. Nissen. I had a complicated shoulder issue, and checked out 3 other doctors before Dr. Nissen. Dr. Nissen was the only one I felt comfortable with doing my surgery (in fact, one of the other 3 docs admitted the surgery was too complicated for him). It was clear from our pre-op meetings that Dr. Nissen had extensive expertise and was confident that he could handle my situation (imaging is not perfect, so the experience to deal with various situations really matters). That said, he is very down-to-earth and easy to talk to. He also clearly cares about his patients. I never felt rushed in my appointments, and he took time to answer all of my questions before and after the surgery, both in appointments and by phone. If you have a shoulder or knee issue (he may also treat elbows? I did not see him for an elbow, though) and live anywhere near Hartford, you should talk to Dr. Nissen!

My 13 yr old gymnast daughter was diagnosed with JOCD in her left knee in spring 2023. We are in Canada and while healthcare is covered in our taxes, speed of referrals can be challenging and finding a surgeon with a great deal of experience who is is invested in the study and treatment of JOCD was challenging. It’s a long haul injury with significant repercussions for sport and life so we wanted to get on the right path as soon as possible. We found Dr Nissen through a parent Facebook group and when we reached out to him in despair, he was incredibly quick to respond and provide us an early evaluation and treatment options. In Aug 2023, we travelled to Connecticut for surgery. Dr Nissen’s office was very helpful in getting everything arranged. His warm and caring approach helped to put our minds at ease during a very worrisome time. He took lots of time to explain everything and was very patient with our questions. We are 6 weeks post op and things are moving along well. I was concerned about remote post surgical care but Dr. Nissen has been very responsive and provided everything our family doctor has needed to support on this end. Any questions or concerns have been quickly responded to. We are extremely happy with the care we have received to date and look forward to becoming a great success story.

I'm truly grateful for the exceptional care and support we received from Dr. Nissen and his team. Despite us being on the other side of the world in Australia. The practice's communication was outstanding as they dedicated a lot of time to organize the procedure for our son's elbow surgery. Dr. Nissan's unwavering expertise and willingness to take on a surgery that others here in Australia wouldn't, shows his knowledge and skill We were put at ease by Dr. Nissan's comprehensive answers to all our questions, and his staff's compassionate nature made a challenging situation much more manageable. The surgery itself was a great success – our son experienced no pain, thanks to Dr. Nissan's skill. We feel a deep sense of gratitude to Dr. Nissan and his wonderful team for their dedication, expertise, and compassionate care. Thanks to them, our son has made a successful recovery. We wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Nissan to anyone having OCD in the elbow.

Carl Nissen and Prism Sports Medicine did an outstanding job on our son’s knee surgery. We really appreciated how much personal time and attention Dr. Nissen was willing to devote to answering our questions and addressing our specific concerns. In addition to being highly personable, Dr. Nissen is a national leading researcher and expert on our son’s knee issue and is deeply involved in developing the latest best practices for treatment, surgery and rehabilitation. We met and spoke with a number of different orthopedic surgeons over the course of a few years of dealing with our son’s tricky knee issues. We often felt like some of these orthopedic surgeons were rushing us out of the room or had more important and valuable knees to be working on. We never felt that way at Prism or with Dr. Nissen. It was so refreshing to have access to all of his orthopedic surgery knowledge, experience, and technical expertise without any of the arrogance that so often comes with all of that. It has been six months since surgery and our son’s knee is feeling strong and he is back to playing the sports that he loves.

Very good doctor. Had the pleasure of having Dr Carl Nissen who was very knowledgeable and reassuring. Was in a motorcycle accident and was in a wheelchair whn I saw him and 1 week later I was getting on my feet. Highly recommended!
